Why your grading pile disappears in the coffee shop and nowhere else

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for professors and higher-education professionals.

You cannot start grading in your silent office, but you plow through forty essays in a busy coffee shop without trying. That is not procrastination, that is your brain's stimulation math, and it is worth teaching to your students too.

What this actually is

Body doubling is working near another person, present but not collaborating, and it works because ADHD and many autistic brains run on activation from external stimulation, not internal willpower alone. Faculty offices are often built for solitary deep work, which is exactly the wrong environment for a brain that needs low-stakes social presence to engage.

How it shows up in you

Solo grading sessions stall for hours, then a walk past a colleague's open door or a shared writing session with another faculty member gets three hours of work done in ninety minutes. If you have chalked this up to poor discipline, it is not discipline, it is a mismatch between your workspace and how your brain actually activates. Years of academic culture telling you real scholars work alone in silence may have kept you from ever testing whether that is even true for your own brain.

How it shows up in your students

The student who never finishes problem sets alone but thrives in your office hours is telling you something about how their brain starts tasks. Group study rooms exist for a reason beyond collaboration, sometimes the group is not doing the work together, they are simply doing separate work in the same room, and that is enough. A student who asks to sit in the back of your office and quietly work while you grade is not being needy, they are correctly identifying the one intervention that will actually get the assignment done.

What actually helps

Build a standing writing hour with a colleague, cameras on, silent, task-parallel work, and protect it like a meeting you cannot move. Offer office hours explicitly as a body doubling space for students working on problem sets, not only a Q&A slot, and say so out loud so students know that is an option. Recommend body doubling apps or virtual study-with-me sessions to students who cannot make it to campus spaces, especially commuter and online students. Redesign one assignment to include an optional supervised work session rather than assuming independent completion is the only legitimate path to a finished product.

One move this term

Add one line to your syllabus offering a scheduled optional co-working block during office hours for anyone who works better with a body in the room.

The room is not neutral, it is either activating your brain or starving it, so stop fighting your own wiring and start using it on purpose.
