Your fourth productivity app download is not the fix

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.

You have downloaded another planner app tonight, color coded three assignments, and already know you will not open it again by Thursday. The app was never the problem. Let us talk about what actually works.

What this actually is

productivity apps are static tools, they hold information but they do not adapt, notice when you are stuck, or push back. ADHD coaching is a relationship, a person who adjusts strategy in real time based on what is actually happening in your week, not what the syllabus assumed would happen.

How it shows up on campus

you set up a beautiful system in Notion during syllabus week and abandon it by week three because the app cannot tell you are avoiding the reading out of dread, not disorganization. You have tried five different apps across four semesters and each failure feels like more proof something is wrong with you. Meanwhile the actual gap was that no tool alone can catch executive dysfunction as it happens, only a person or a live structure can.

What actually helps

stop chasing the perfect app and instead build one small external check in, a weekly text to a friend, a TA meeting, or a coach who asks what actually got done. If your school offers ADHD coaching through disability services or a wellness center, that live human feedback loop will outperform any app you have tried. Use apps only for the narrow thing they are good at, like a single visible timer or a single shared calendar, not as your whole system. Track what actually happens for one week honestly before blaming yourself for the next app's failure.

One move today

ask your disability services office one question, does the school offer ADHD coaching or a peer mentor program, and if yes, book the first appointment this week.

Bottom line, apps hold your plan, but only a person can notice when the plan and your brain have stopped matching, and that noticing is the whole point.
