The coach you need is not the app you downloaded

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for nurses.

You have got a med pass in six minutes, a call light going off, and a productivity app on your phone buzzing about a habit streak you broke three days ago. That app is not going to save you.

What this actually is

ADHD coaching is a live, human accountability relationship built around your actual brain and your actual shift. Productivity apps are static tools built for a brain that reliably checks notifications and follows a template. Most ND brains do not work that way, and neither does a twelve hour shift with five admissions.

How it shows up

If you are ND yourself, you have downloaded six planner apps this year. Each one worked for four days, then vanished into app folder purgatory the second your unit got short staffed. That is not a discipline failure, that is a tool mismatch. Apps assume a stable routine, and your job is the opposite of stable.

In your patients, you see the same mismatch from the other side. The ND patient handed a discharge app or a symptom tracker QR code and told to just log it daily is being handed a tool built for someone else’s brain. They nod. They will not use it. Not because they are noncompliant, because the tool does not match how they process information.

What actually helps

For you: stop chasing the perfect app. A body double, a coworker who texts did you chart, or a real coach who adjusts to your week beats any algorithm.

For patients: pair any app or handout with a live walkthrough, not just a link. Ask them to show you, in the room, how they would actually use it once, before you send them home with it.

Offer a human follow up option alongside the digital one. A callback, a portal message you initiate, not one they have to remember to open.

When a patient says an app did not work, believe them and pivot the tool. Do not repeat the instructions louder.

One move today

Before you hand a patient any app or QR code today, watch them tap through the first screen in front of you. If they hesitate, hand them a paper alternative instead.

The brain that needs backup is not broken, the tool handed to it just was not built for it.
