A companion to the main ADHD article, written for professors and higher-education professionals.
A student shows you their color coded app, three reminder systems, and a spreadsheet, and still has not turned in the last two assignments. You assume they are not trying. They are trying with the wrong tool.
What this actually is
productivity apps store information, they do not adapt or notice a person spiraling in real time. ADHD coaching is different, a live relationship that adjusts strategy as the week actually unfolds. Many ND students and ND faculty cycle through app after app looking for a fix that a static tool was never built to provide.
How it shows up
in you, if you run this way, it might be the fifth task manager you have installed this year while your actual grading backlog grows, because the app cannot tell you why you are avoiding it. In your students it looks like elaborate systems built during the first week of class that quietly die by week five, followed by shame that reads to you as lack of effort. The gap is not motivation, it is that no app alone can catch executive dysfunction the moment it happens.
What actually helps
build a live check in into your course structure, a short weekly email or five minute meeting, rather than assuming a syllabus and a calendar invite are enough scaffolding. Refer struggling students to campus ADHD coaching or peer mentoring if it exists, and say the name out loud, most students never hear it mentioned. Use Universal Design for Learning by offering one flexible low stakes checkpoint per unit instead of one distant high stakes deadline. For yourself, replace one more app trial with one honest accountability conversation with a colleague or mentor.
One move this term
mention your school's ADHD coaching or academic coaching resource by name in your syllabus and again verbally in week one, not buried in a policy page.
Bottom line, tools hold a plan, people notice when the plan stops working, and only one of those actually changes behavior.
