Staring at the blank paper for three hours is not procrastination

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.

The paper is due at midnight. You have known for two weeks. You have been sitting at your desk for three hours, phone face down, document open, and you have typed nothing. This is not laziness, this is task paralysis.

What this actually is

Task paralysis happens when your brain cannot find the entry point into a task, usually because it is too big, too vague, or too loaded with judgment about how it will go. The knowing what to do and the being able to start are two separate systems, and ADHD disconnects them under pressure.

How it shows up

In college it shows up as staring at a syllabus reading list and doing nothing because you cannot decide where to begin. It shows up as an all nighter that starts at midnight instead of six, because the deadline finally became real enough to force ignition. It shows up in your dorm room specifically, no external structure, no bell schedule, nobody checking if you started, just you and a task that will not move.

What actually helps

Shrink the task until it is stupidly small. Not write the paper, open the document and type one sentence. The goal is ignition, not completion.

Body double at the library or on a video call. Working near another person, even in silence, lowers the activation barrier in a way willpower alone does not.

Set a two minute timer and tell yourself you can stop after. Most of the time your brain, once moving, keeps going past the buzzer.

Register with disability services now, not during a crisis. Extended time and flexible deadlines exist specifically for the gap between knowing and starting.

One move today

Set a timer for two minutes and open the one document you have been avoiding. Type one sentence, even a bad one, then decide if you stop.

You are not stuck because you do not care, you are stuck because starting is a different skill than knowing, and that skill can be built one tiny entry point at a time.
