Diagnosis was never just about symptoms. It was about who was allowed to be disruptive, and who was expected to be invisible.
If you have read articles comparing ADHD and autism and walked away saying “I see myself in both lists, what is wrong with me?”, nothing is wrong with you. You are observing the truth.
The two-way comparison misses the third option, where most adults Googling this actually live: AUDHD. Both. Simultaneously. Running two operating systems at once.
By the end of this page, the goal is not just to understand the differences. It is to start recognizing the people who were overlooked, including possibly yourself.
ADHD did not look different in girls. It was interpreted differently.
ADHD in boys and men, with the actual translation
- “More hyperactive and impulsive” β They externalize what is happening in their brain.
- “Acting out, aggression” β This is dysregulation, not defiance.
- “Diagnosed earlier” β Because they disrupted the environment.
Boys were allowed to be loud, so their ADHD got seen.
ADHD in girls and women, with the actual translation
- “More inattentive” β Internal chaos. External compliance.
- “People-pleasing and perfectionism” β They did not stop struggling. They just hid it better.
- “Misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression” β We treated the symptoms. We never treated the system underneath.
Girls were not less ADHD. They were just better at becoming who everyone needed them to be. And that comes at a cost.
What no one was paying attention to
Before assuming anything is “just ADHD,” check three variables:
- Sleep.Β Women: 10 hours minimum. Men: closer to 8. (“You have met one ND person, you have met one.”)
- Hydration.Β Coffee dehydrates. Soda dehydrates. Real water and electrolytes hydrate.
- Nutrition.Β ND adults need 3-4x more protein, healthy fats, and natural sugars than NT adults.
AUDHD: chaos and rigidity at the same time
AUDHD in boys and men
- Hyperactivity plus rigidityΒ β stimulation AND sameness
- Social strugglesΒ β mismatch in processing, not lack of desire
- Meltdowns and shutdownsΒ β nervous system overload, not behavior problem
- Sensory issuesΒ β increase hyperactivity
AUDHD in girls and women
- Masking and camouflagingΒ β survival
- Relationship-focused but strugglingΒ β study connection, do not always experience it naturally
- High burnout in 6-month cyclesΒ β running two operating systems at once
- Sensory issuesΒ β shut them down (where boys ramp up, girls collapse)
- Identity confusionΒ that has lasted as long as they can remember
AUDHD women are the group that gets called “too much” while simultaneously being completely unseen.
How this gets missed
- DSM listed ADHD and autism as mutually exclusive until 2013
- Criteria built on hyperactive 7-year-old boys
- Masking hid them from the framework
- Anxiety/depression diagnoses got there first because louder picture
Term reframes
- RSDΒ β Not sensitivity. Pattern recognition + emotional intensity.
- MaskingΒ β A learned survival strategy.
- ODD/PDAΒ β Often nervous system resistance, not defiance.
- Anxiety/depression in this populationΒ β Often trauma-based, not naturally co-occurring.
Be careful not to reinforce labels without context. Otherwise we become part of the system that missed them.
How to know which one you are
ADHD-only: routines useful not necessary, small talk annoying not painful, do well in unpredictability, externalize.
Autistic-only: routines necessary, sensory consistently high-cost, small talk actively bad, predictability required, deep durable interests for years.
AUDHD: both lists describe you, contradictions constant, novelty AND sameness, hyperfocus AND switching, identity has felt paradoxical for as long as you can remember.
For most adults Googling this: the third one.
Two questions
Where in your life were you rewarded for masking?
Where were you punished for being dysregulated?
What’s next
Most of you (and your clients) are not struggling because you lack discipline. You are struggling because you were misunderstood, mislabeled, and taught to adapt instead of being supported.
The work is to stop performing and start understanding.
If you saw yourself in this page, that is not a coincidence. That is context you were never given.

FAQ
Do I need both diagnoses formally? Depends on what you need them for.
Can I be AUDHD without full clinical criteria? Yes.
Is one half “more”? Both always present. Which is louder shifts.
Late-diagnosed? Late-Diagnosed ND. Now What? is the hub.
