Coaching or therapy: the college ADHD question nobody explains right

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.

You are three tabs deep searching help with ADHD college at 1am, and every result mutes into the same vague word: support. Nobody tells you which kind, and the wrong pick can eat a whole semester before you notice it is not working.

What this actually is

ADHD coaching and therapy are different tools for different jobs. Coaching builds systems and skills for the life you are living right now: getting to class, starting the paper, managing your calendar, breaking a fifteen page assignment into steps you can actually begin. Therapy works the emotional layer underneath, things like anxiety, trauma, or the shame that piles up after years of missed deadlines and disappointed looks. Confusing the two is not a small mistake, it is the difference between actually getting unstuck and paying for insight you already had.

How it shows up on campus

You can explain your executive function struggles perfectly in therapy and still show up late to every 9am class. That is not therapy failing you, it is the wrong tool for a logistics problem. Or you build a solid planner system with a coach and still spiral every time a professor's email lands, because a coach is not equipped to touch the RSD underneath that spiral. Most ND students need both, at different moments, for different jobs, not one forever, and the two can absolutely run at the same time without contradiction.

What actually helps

Get specific about the problem before you pick the fix. If it is, I know what to do and cannot make myself start, that is executive function, coaching territory. If it is, I am ashamed and avoidant and it is bigger than the task, that is emotional, therapy territory. Use your disability services office as a triage point, staff there often know which local or telehealth providers actually specialize in ADHD rather than generic mental health, and can point you toward campus specific coaching programs many students never hear about. Ask any provider directly whether they have ADHD specific training, generic therapy without that literacy will burn your semester and your trust. Stack cheap, immediate scaffolding, body doubling in the library, a shared calendar with a friend, timers on your phone, while you sort longer term support, you do not have to wait for the perfect provider to start functioning today.

One move today

Write one sentence describing your actual problem, is it starting or is it shame, and send it to disability services or your counseling center asking which kind of provider fits.

You do not need to guess your way through this. Name the gap, then match the tool to it.
