A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.
You are sitting in disability services with a diagnosis letter and no idea what to actually ask for. Extended time is not the only thing on the menu.
What this actually is
Accommodations are not favors, they are the legal leveling of a playing field that was never built for your brain. Extended time gets mentioned constantly, but it is one item on a much longer list, and most ND students never learn the rest exists.
How it shows up in your life on campus
You sit through a three hour lecture hall exam with fluorescent lights and constant shuffling, convinced you just need to concentrate harder. You miss half of what a professor says because you are also tracking the hum of the HVAC system. You bomb a group project not because you do not understand the material but because verbal instructions given once, fast, in a loud room do not stick.
What actually helps
Ask for reduced distraction testing rooms, not just extra time, if sensory noise tanks your focus. Ask for recorded lectures or permission to record, so auditory processing gaps do not cost you content. Ask for flexible deadlines with a clear structure, not blanket extensions, since open ended flexibility can be its own executive function trap. Ask for note taking support or slides in advance, and for alternatives to timed in class writing if freeze response under time pressure is your actual barrier, not knowledge gaps. Ask for a reduced course load counted as full time, priority registration so you can build a schedule around your actual energy patterns, and permission to stand, move, or step out during lecture without it reading as disrespect.
Bring documentation, but do not over explain in the meeting itself. You are not there to prove how hard your life is, you are there to name what you need so the accommodations office can match it to what already exists in their system. If they say no to something reasonable, ask what the appeal process looks like, most offices have one and most students never ask. Keep a copy of every accommodation letter in your own files too, not just the office's, in case a professor loses track of it mid semester. And remember accommodations can be adjusted mid semester if something is not working, you are not locked into whatever you requested in week one.
One move today
Email disability services this exact line: I would like to discuss accommodations beyond extended time, including reduced distraction testing, recorded lectures, and flexible deadline structures. Then book the appointment. Specific requests get taken seriously faster than vague ones.
The problem was never that you needed more time to think. It was that the room was never built for how you think.
