AUDHD Burnout in Women: For You, On a Hard Day

If you are reading this on a hard day, do one thing on this page. Not all of them.

Pick one.

That is enough.

Before Anything Else

You are not failing. You are not lazy. You are not weak.

You are an AUDHD woman whose nervous system has been running too many programs for too long. The exhaustion is real. The brain fog is real. The not-feeling-like-yourself is real.

What you are experiencing has a name. It is AUDHD burnout. It is recoverable. The recovery is slower than you want it to be. That is not your fault.

The One-Thing List

Pick one. Skip the rest.

Drink water. A glass. Right now. That counts.

Eat something. Anything. Bar, toast, fruit, leftover whatever. Not a meal. Just food. That counts.

Sit somewhere quiet for five minutes. No phone. No goal. Five minutes. That counts.

Take the next thing off your calendar. The next non-essential commitment. Cancel it. Without explanation. That counts.

Tell one person you are not okay. A text. Three words. “I am struggling.” That counts.

Lie down. Even if you do not sleep. Lying down is not nothing. That counts.

Step outside. Two minutes. Not a walk. Just outside. That counts.

Change one sensory input. Turn down a light. Turn off background noise. Take off the bra. The system will register it. That counts.

That is the list. You did one. You are done for this hour.

On Decisions

Do not make any big decisions today. Not about your job. Not about your relationship. Not about your future.

Burnout is the worst possible state for decision-making. Your access to your own preferences is offline. The decision-making system is part of what is broken right now.

If something feels urgent today, write it down. Look at it again next week.

On Productivity

Today is not a productivity day. Stop trying to make it one.

The work that does not get done today will still be there tomorrow. The work you force through in burnout will be lower quality and cost you more recovery time than skipping it would.

The most productive thing you can do today is rest in a way that actually registers as rest. That is not a metaphor. It is the math.

On Other People

You are allowed to not respond.

You are allowed to cancel.

You are allowed to take longer than usual.

You are allowed to be flat with people who love you. They will still love you tomorrow.

Anyone who requires you to perform today is asking for something you cannot give. That is information about the relationship, not about you.

On the Voice in Your Head

The shame is loud right now. The “should be doing more” voice is louder than usual. The “what is wrong with me” voice is constant.

This is the burnout talking. It is not a clear-eyed assessment of your character. It is a depleted nervous system generating noise.

You do not have to argue with it. You do not have to fix it. You can just notice it is there and put it down for now.

What to Do If It Is Worse Than Usual

If today you are:

  • Unable to do any basic self-care (eating, drinking, hygiene)
  • Sleeping more than 12 hours and unable to get up
  • Crying without being able to stop
  • Having thoughts that you would be better off gone
  • Disconnected from yourself in a way that scares you

Reach out. To your therapist. To your doctor. To one person you trust. To 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) if it is acute.

You do not have to handle this alone. You should not handle this alone.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow can be the same as today. That is allowed.

The recovery is not a vertical line. It is uneven. The bad days do not mean you are getting worse. The good days do not mean you are recovered.

Just one thing. Just today. That is the work.

You Are Coming Back

You will not feel like this forever.

The version of you that you cannot find right now is not gone. She is offline. Coming back online takes longer than you want it to take. It is happening anyway.

Trust the slow.
