A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.
You skip the dining hall stairs, again, because your joints are screaming, and then you sit through a three hour seminar and by the end you cannot follow a sentence you could have followed easily that morning.
What this actually is
AUDHD brains often come with connective tissue and sensory processing differences that make chronic pain more common, not less. Pain is not separate from your executive function, it eats the same limited battery your brain uses for focus, planning, and emotional regulation. When pain spikes, your ADHD symptoms spike with it. This is not two problems, it is one compounding problem.
How it shows up
In college it looks like walking across a sprawling campus between classes leaving you too wiped to actually absorb the next lecture. It looks like all nighters that used to just cost you sleep now costing you days of flare up afterward. It looks like sitting in hard plastic chairs for ninety minute classes while trying to take notes and track a discussion, two jobs your body cannot fund at once. Roommates and professors see missed classes and assume motivation is the issue. Your nervous system is just paying two bills from one account.
What actually helps
Get pain and flexible attendance both written into your accommodation letter, not just one or the other, since colleges often only think to address one. Build your schedule around your body's real patterns, request no classes before ten if mornings are worst, and use online or hybrid options where campus offers them. Carry a small kit, heat patch, meds, water, so a flare does not turn into an emergency mid lecture. Tell disability services specifically that pain drains cognitive function too, so extensions cover thinking fog, not just physical absence.
One move today
Email disability services and ask explicitly whether your accommodation letter covers both pain flares and the cognitive fog that follows them.
Your body and your brain are not fighting each other, they are running on the same drained battery, and that is not weakness, it is physics.
