How to build a workday around the brain you actually have, instead of forcing the same flat day every day.
Short definition
The Energy-Shaped Workday is a way of designing your day around your real energy pattern rather than a fixed clock-based schedule. You build it from three pieces: anchors (the few fixed points that hold the day together), protected focus windows (the hours you guard for deep work, matched to when your brain actually shows up), and named support needs (the help you set up in advance so the low parts of the day do not collapse).
Where it sits
It runs on top of Good, Better, Best Days. Good/Better/Best gives you three scaled versions of a day matched to capacity. The Energy-Shaped Workday is the structure you pour into whichever version today turned out to be. It is an execution-layer framework, a sibling to other capacity-based planning tools rather than a willpower-based one.
The three parts
Anchors. Two or three fixed points (a start ritual, one standing commitment, a hard stop) that give the day a spine without scripting every hour.
Protected focus windows. The blocks you defend for the work that needs your sharpest brain, placed where your energy reliably peaks, not where the calendar happens to be empty.
Named support needs. The body doubling, the pre-decided meals, the buffer, the resets, all set up before the dip instead of scrambled for during it.
How to work with it
Map your real energy across a typical week, mark your peaks and dips, cluster heavy work into the peaks, and pre-load support into the dips. Then write the day in pencil and adjust as your pattern shifts. The full walkthrough and the paired ND Workday Design Canvas live in the article.
