Framework first named by Danielle Ralston (MBA · MSW · ADHD-CCSP · PhD(c) · Master ADHD Coach), Founder of ND Hive. Published May 2026 at ndhive.com/hive/frameworks/identity-override-loop/.
What Is the Identity Override Loop?
The Identity Override Loop is the ND Hive proprietary name for the specific six-stage pattern that runs underneath masking in the autistic, ADHD, and AUDHD brain. It is what happens when a social demand triggers you to override your instinct, run an “acceptable” script, and pay the cost later.
Masking sits inside the The Contradiction Knot. The Identity Override Loop names the mechanism by which it runs.
The more it works externally, the worse it gets internally. You look “fine,” so nobody sees the cost. So you keep doing it.
The Six Stages
Stage 1. Trigger. A social demand or perceived expectation. A meeting, a phone call, a family dinner, a moment that asks you to be “on.”
Stage 2. Override. Suppress instinct. Run the script. The version of you that people expect comes online and the version of you that actually exists steps back.
Stage 3. Perform. Maintain the acceptable version. Eye contact you do not feel. Energy you are borrowing. A voice and posture calibrated for someone else’s comfort.
Stage 4. Cost. Energy drain plus internal disconnection. You are watching yourself from inside the performance. The longer it runs, the further from yourself you get.
Stage 5. Crash. Shutdown, irritability, or isolation. Often hours later, sometimes days. The bill arrives whether you are ready or not.
Stage 6. Repeat. Because it worked. You got through the meeting. You did not get fired. So next time, you mask again. The loop pays you in survival and charges you in identity.
What This Looks Like in Daily Life
You finish the work meeting and collapse in the parking lot. You spend the whole dinner being “good” and snap at your partner the second you get home. You are praised for being “such a professional” while privately wondering if anyone has ever actually met you.
Masking is not always conscious. Many AUDHD adults run the Identity Override Loop without realizing it, because they have done it since childhood. The exhaustion feels like a personal failure instead of a predictable cost.
Why Standard Advice Fails Here
“Just be yourself” assumes you have access to yourself. Most AUDHD adults running the Identity Override Loop have lost track of where the script ends and the self begins. Unmasking is not a switch you flip. It is a long, slow, often grief-inducing process of finding out what was always under the override.
Standard advice also misses the cost structure. People say “stop masking, it is exhausting.” But masking is the thing that has been keeping you employed, partnered, and socially safe. You cannot stop it without first building somewhere safe to be unmasked. The loop is a survival adaptation, not a bad habit.
What Helps
- Name the stage in real time. “I am in Stage 3” while you are performing creates a small piece of distance that protects identity from full override.
- Build unmasked containers. One relationship, one room, one hour a day where the script comes off. Not “all of life unmasked.” A reliable strip of life unmasked.
- Plan for the crash. Stage 5 is not avoidable on a high-demand day. It is predictable. Schedule recovery the way you would schedule a workout. Cancel the next thing before you need to.
- Stop praising the performance. If people who love you do not know you are masking, they cannot meet the real you. Telling them is part of the work.
Related ND Hive Frameworks
How this framework connects to the rest of the ND Hive system:
- The Threat Misfire Loop. The RSD pattern that often triggers Identity Override.
- The Contradiction Knot. The AUDHD condition Identity Override commonly serves.
- Cognitive Friction. The external pressure that fires the Override Loop.
- The AUDHD Burnout Spiral. Where chronic Identity Override leads.
The Bottom Line
Masking is not lying. It is a six-stage survival loop that worked well enough to keep running. The cost is not visible to other people, which is exactly why it does not feel allowed to stop.
You are not two-faced. You are running an override system that has protected you. Unmasking is not flipping the system off. It is building enough safety somewhere that the override does not have to run everywhere.
