What It Is
The Tether is the ND Hive framework for limerence: the involuntary, all-consuming fixation on one person that an AuDHD brain can fall into and cannot seem to climb out of.
Most advice treats limerence as a willpower problem, a crush you should be able to drop. The Tether reframes it as what it actually is: a feedback loop your brain keeps running because uncertainty keeps paying out. You do not close the loop by feeling less. You close it by feeding it less.
This is a relational-intensity sibling to the executive function family. Cognitive rigidity is when you can’t let go and change course. The Tether is when you can’t let go of a person.
The Mechanism
A person becomes a Tether, an unresolved question your brain refuses to close: does this person want me, and could this be real? The brain hates an unanswered question, so it keeps the tab open, running the program day and night. The not-knowing is not the bug. It is the fuel. The felt experience of a running loop is the Ache: the longing, the intrusive thoughts, the mood that rises and falls on a single text.
The Three Feeders
Three AuDHD wiring patterns keep the loop powered.
- Dopamine. The ADHD brain chases the spike, and uncertainty spikes hardest. A person who might respond is a bigger hit than one who reliably will. Unavailability is the accelerant.
- Monotropism. Autistic attention runs deep and narrow, one channel at a time. When the beam locks onto a person, they become the channel and the rest of the world goes thin and grey.
- RSD. Rejection sensitive dysphoria makes the possibility of being unwanted feel unsurvivable, so the stakes get cranked up and the checking never stops.
The Four Closers
You close a Tether by cutting off the Feeders and giving your nervous system somewhere to land. Each Closer can be run gently (to ease the suffering while the limerence continues) or fully (to close the loop).
- Name the Build. Separate the real person from the version your brain constructed. Most of the Ache is aimed at someone you invented.
- Starve the Slot Machine. Cut the intermittent reward: the checking, re-reading, hope-feeding contact. A machine that never pays eventually goes quiet.
- Redirect the Beam. Monotropic focus does not switch off. It transfers. Give the beam a new, absorbing place to land.
- Soothe the Alarm. Regulate your nervous system directly through the withdrawal instead of pulling the lever for relief. Plan for the hard days in advance.
The One-Line Version
A brain wired to lock on, chase the maybe, and feel rejection like a wound finds an unavailable person and forms a Tether. Three Feeders keep it running. Four Closers shut it down. You are not obsessive. You are running a loop, and loops can be closed.
