Your Clutter Is Decisions: A Worksheet
Paired worksheet. Your Clutter Isn’t a Character Flaw
For an ADHD or autistic brain, clutter is usually a pile of unmade decisions, a visible-memory system, and real attachment to objects. Not laziness, not a character flaw. This worksheet helps you see what your brain is actually doing so you can work with it. There are no right answers. Write whatever is true for you right now.
Prompt 1 of 6
Pick one pile, surface, drawer, or folder. Just one. Where is it, and what story do you tell about yourself when you look at it? (lazy, dirty, broken, behind)
Prompt 2 of 6
Try the reframe in your own words: that pile is not who you are. It is decisions your brain found too expensive to make. Write it your way.
Prompt 3 of 6
Look at a few items. Which are open decisions (you don’t know whether to keep them), which are memory cues (out so you won’t forget), and which are feelings (comfort, identity, grief, a special interest)? Which kind is most of your pile?
Prompt 4 of 6
Make one ‘decide once’ rule. Pick a category that always ends up loose (mail, chargers, clothes, receipts) and the one place it will always go from now on.
Prompt 5 of 6
For one item you’re attached to but it’s in your way: what’s your move? Keep it on purpose with no guilt, put it in a dated Maybe Box, or photograph it and release the object? If it’s grief or identity, name that here.
Prompt 6 of 6
Lower the cost of starting: one surface you’ll begin with, for how long (5 minutes / 10 minutes / one song), and who could be in the room or on a screen with you while you do it.
Next Steps (Check the ones you’re taking)
Pick ONE surface and set a timer for 10 minutes. Not the room. One surface.
Make one ‘decide once’ rule today and put it somewhere you’ll see it.
Set up one piece of visible storage (a clear bin, an open shelf, a labeled tray) that works with your memory instead of against it.
Start a dated Maybe Box for the items you can’t decide on yet.
Try ND Hive for 7 days, free. Bring one surface to a body doubling session and do it alongside someone.
What Surfaced for You?
Use this space for anything that came up while you were writing, especially about the items that carry feeling. A memory, a grief, something you want to keep on purpose.
