🗺️ Where Am I in the Roadmap?

A checklist from ND Hive. Companion to “The 5-Year Roadmap After Late Diagnosis”

What this is

The 5-year arc after late diagnosis is real. Most adults move through specific phases, often in this order, often with overlap. This checklist helps you locate yourself on the map so you can stop expecting yourself to be somewhere you’re not yet, and stop being surprised by what’s coming next.

Takes 8 minutes.

How this works

Each phase has signature experiences. Check the boxes that fit you RIGHT NOW. The phase with the most checks is where you are. You may be in two phases at once, that’s normal.

Year 1: Recognition + Reframing

  • ☐ I’ve had moments of “oh my god, this explains everything”
  • ☐ I’m reading constantly. Articles, books, social media, every personal story I can find.
  • ☐ I’m crying about my childhood / younger self with new context
  • ☐ I keep telling specific people in my life “I think I have this”
  • ☐ I’m angry. At my parents, schools, doctors, partners who missed it.
  • ☐ I’m exhausted by how much processing this requires
  • ☐ I’m comparing my life to a version where I’d been diagnosed earlier

If you checked 5+: You’re in Year 1. The grief and recognition phase. This is real grief. Don’t rush it.

Year 1-2: Diagnosis Pursuit OR Self-Recognition Acceptance

  • ☐ I’m pursuing formal diagnosis (waiting list, evaluation, processing)
  • ☐ I’ve been formally diagnosed and I’m processing what that means
  • ☐ I’ve decided self-recognition is enough for me
  • ☐ I’m wrestling with whether to disclose to family, friends, work
  • ☐ I’m dealing with disbelief from people who knew me pre-diagnosis
  • ☐ I’m relieved + grieving simultaneously

If you checked 4+: You’re in the diagnosis-or-decision phase. The decisions you make here shape years 2-3.

Year 2: Identity Restructuring

  • ☐ My sense of self is reorganizing around new information
  • ☐ I’m questioning life choices I made before I knew (career, relationships, friendships)
  • ☐ I’m joining ND communities online, finding my people
  • ☐ I’m starting to ask “what would I do if I’d known?”
  • ☐ I’m dropping masks in some spaces, keeping them in others
  • ☐ I’m starting therapy / coaching / new support
  • ☐ I feel like the “real me” is finally available

If you checked 5+: You’re in identity restructuring. This is destabilizing AND clarifying. Both at once.

Year 3: Practical Restructuring

  • ☐ I’m changing systems at work to match my brain
  • ☐ I’m building (or trying to build) external scaffolding for my life
  • ☐ I’m reconfiguring relationships based on who can hold the unmasked me
  • ☐ I’m advocating for accommodations
  • ☐ I’m leaving / changing jobs that don’t fit
  • ☐ I’m experimenting with what works (and what doesn’t)
  • ☐ I’m tired of the experiment but I see the gains

If you checked 4+: You’re in practical restructuring. The actual life-rebuild work. Slower than you want, faster than you think.

Year 4: Integration

  • ☐ The diagnosis isn’t a daily event anymore. It’s just part of who I am.
  • ☐ I have systems that mostly work
  • ☐ I have people who get it
  • ☐ I’m helping other people now (formally or informally)
  • ☐ I’m grieving less, living more
  • ☐ I’m noticing my strengths in ways I couldn’t before
  • ☐ The version of me from Year 1 feels far away

If you checked 4+: You’re in integration. The big upheaval has passed. The new normal is forming.

Year 5+: Sustainable Self

  • ☐ I have a stable sense of identity that includes my neurodivergence
  • ☐ I have systems, people, and rhythms that work for my actual brain
  • ☐ I help others find their way (mentoring, advocacy, community, work)
  • ☐ I notice when I’m slipping out of my systems and I correct earlier
  • ☐ I’m building things that wouldn’t exist if I were neurotypical
  • ☐ I am not “fixed.” I am differently-wired and I work with the wiring.
  • ☐ I have grief days but they don’t take me under anymore

If you checked 4+: You’re in the sustainable self phase. This is where the wiring stops being a war and starts being a feature.

What to do based on where you are

Year 1 (Recognition): Permission to read, cry, rage, process. Don’t make big decisions. Don’t restructure everything yet. Find one community. Survive the wave.

Year 1-2 (Decision): Make the diagnosis decision deliberately. Don’t disclose to everyone yet. Pick the people who can hold this.

Year 2 (Identity): Therapy, community, time with other ND adults. Lower one mask in one safe space at a time. The identity is reforming. Trust it.

Year 3 (Practical): Build systems alongside other ND adults, not from neurotypical advice. Body doubling, external scaffolding, accommodations. Job changes if needed. Relationship realignments if needed.

Year 4 (Integration): Maintenance. Notice what’s working. Cut what isn’t. Start helping the next person who’s where you were in Year 1.

Year 5+ (Sustainable Self): You are the resource. Other people in Year 1 need to hear from you.

Reminder

There is no skipping phases. There is no “I’m too smart to grieve.” There is no “I should be at Year 4 by now.”

This is a real timeline for real reorganization of an identity. Your only job is to keep going. The version of you who reaches Year 5 is shaped by the version of you who survived Year 1.
