A companion to the main ADHD article, written for first responders.
You work better with a partner than solo. Every medic and cop knows this. What you may not know is why, and how the same wiring shows up in the person you just cuffed for noncompliance.
What this actually is
Coached body doubling is doing a task alongside another engaged person, in person or on a call, so their presence supplies the structure your brain will not generate alone. It boosts arousal and initiation. For ADHD and autistic brains, this is not a nice-to-have, it is often the difference between a task starting and a task never starting.
How it shows up
In you: if you’re ND, your report writing, your gear checks, your training reps all go faster with someone nearby, even quietly. Alone in the report room at 2am, the same task stalls for hours. That is not you being lazy after a long shift, that is a missing external anchor.
In the field: the autistic person mid-meltdown who will not follow your rapid multi-step commands is not defying you, their processing has locked. The ADHD person frozen at a chaotic scene, unable to act on a simple instruction, is not stalling on purpose. Both need one clear anchor point, not five commands stacked at once.
What actually helps
On scene, drop to one instruction at a time and stay physically present while they attempt it. Your steady presence is doing real regulatory work, not just crowd control.
For yourself, pair your paperwork and your training reps with a partner instead of doing them solo whenever your schedule allows it.
Use a fellow responder or peer support contact as a body double for the admin tasks you keep pushing to the end of shift.
Stop reading someone’s freeze or fumble as disrespect. Read it as a nervous system waiting for an anchor.
One move today
Next report you keep putting off, sit near a partner while you write it, even without talking. Clock how much faster it moves.
A person who needs someone present to start is not weak, they are wired for co-regulation, and so, probably, are you.
