A companion to the main ADHD article, written for professors and higher-education professionals.
You've got forty essays open in one tab and a blank reply sitting in your inbox, and you have stared at both for twenty minutes doing neither. Then a colleague sits at the other end of the table to work quietly on their own thing, and the grading starts moving. That is not a fluke. That is neuroscience.
What this actually is
Body doubling is working alongside another person, in person or on video, each doing separate tasks, with no coaching or collaboration required. The other person's presence raises accountability and arousal just enough to move a stalled ADHD or autistic brain from stuck to started. It is not about willpower. It is about activation.
How it shows up
If you run neurodivergent yourself, you may draft a sharp lecture at midnight on a silent video call with a friend, but the same lecture alone at 2pm never gets past the title slide. Grading, reference letters, and revise and resubmits, the tasks with no built in deadline pressure, are where this bites hardest. In your students, it shows up as the kid who cannot start the paper alone in a dorm room but drafts the whole thing in two hours at a library table next to a stranger. That student is not lazy. Their brain needed a body in the room, not a lecture on time management.
What actually helps
Block a standing co-working hour with a colleague for grading or writing, no talking required, just parallel presence. Point stalled students toward body doubling study rooms or a virtual co-working app like Focusmate instead of only prescribing silence and a closed door. Add a line to your syllabus normalizing group study spaces for solo assignments, so using one reads as strategy, not cheating. In office hours, ask a stuck student what conditions were true the last time they actually finished something, not just what the assignment requires.
One move this term
Pick one recurring task you personally stall on, grading, letters, or prep, and put a standing thirty minute co-working block on your calendar with a colleague this week.
Coached body doubling is not hand holding, it is a documented way to borrow another nervous system's momentum until yours catches up.
