👥 The Body Doubling Match Sheet
A worksheet from ND Hive. Companion to “What is Body Doubling?”
What this is
Body doubling works because your nervous system regulates better when another regulated human is present. But not every human regulates you, and not every space works.
This worksheet helps you identify the specific people, types of presence, and situations where body doubling actually lands for your brain. It takes 12 to 15 minutes. You build the map once and refer back to it on hard days.
What body doubling actually does
- Provides a regulated nervous system to borrow. Your brain reads “I’m not alone” and the threat baseline drops.
- Externalizes the task. It exists in shared reality, not just your head.
- Adds gentle witness. Someone sees you starting, even if they say nothing.
- Builds a rhythm. Consistent body-doubling creates predictable safety.
- Bypasses the “should I” loop. You’re already there. The decision is made.
The mistake most people make is treating body doubling as accountability (“they’ll know if I don’t do it”). That activates threat. The shift is treating it as co-regulation (“their presence makes my system feel safe enough to act”).
Part 1: Your body-doubling type audit
Different brains regulate to different kinds of presence. Check what works for you.
- ☐ Live video (Zoom, FaceTime, Hive Sessions). See and be seen.
- ☐ Audio only (phone call, voice room). Hear and be heard.
- ☐ In-person silent (sitting in same room, working separately)
- ☐ In-person interactive (light chatting, low-stakes presence)
- ☐ Text-based (Slack, Discord, chat where someone notices when I go quiet)
- ☐ Asynchronous (knowing someone will see my “starting now” message even if not at the same time)
- ☐ Anonymous group (live co-working with strangers, e.g. a coffee shop)
- ☐ Pre-recorded (“study with me” videos). Works for some, not others.
Which TWO work BEST for you?
1. ___________________________________________
2. ___________________________________________
Which TWO sound like they should work but don’t actually land?
1. ___________________________________________
2. ___________________________________________
This is data, not failure. Match your body doubling to the type that lands.
Part 2: Your humans
You don’t need 12 people. You need 3 to 5 across different roles.
The “any time” person
Someone you can text “I’m stuck” to and they show up (call, text-back, presence) without explanation.
Name: ___________________________________________
How to reach them: ___________________________________________
The standing-call person
Someone you have a recurring co-working time with.
Name: ___________________________________________
Day + time: ___________________________________________
The professional / paid presence
A coach, therapist, Hive community, paid co-working space.
Name / community: ___________________________________________
Schedule: ___________________________________________
The peer / friend who gets it
Someone who shares the ND experience and doesn’t need it explained.
Name: ___________________________________________
How we connect: ___________________________________________
If any of these are empty: that’s the work. Building this map IS body-doubling preparation.
Part 3: Match the task to the doubling type
For these common task types, what kind of body doubling works best for YOUR brain?
| Task type | Best body-doubling type for me |
|---|---|
| Email I’ve been avoiding | _______________________________ |
| Deep creative work | _______________________________ |
| Boring admin (taxes, paperwork) | _______________________________ |
| Cleaning / physical task | _______________________________ |
| Hard conversation prep | _______________________________ |
| Recovery / rest day | _______________________________ |
Part 4: This week’s first ask
Pick ONE person from Part 2 and reach out this week with a specific body-doubling ask.
Sample script: “Hey. I’m trying to actually finish [task]. Want to be on a call with me Thursday at 2 for 45 minutes? You don’t have to do anything, just be on. I work better when someone else is there.”
Who I’m reaching out to:
___________________________________________
When:
___________________________________________
What I’ll say:
___________________________________________
Reminder
Asking for body doubling is not asking for help. It is asking for presence. The person you ask is not doing labor. They’re just being there.
If asking feels uncomfortable, that’s a signal of how much you’ve been white-knuckling alone. Body doubling doesn’t make you needy. It makes you regulated.
