🗝️ The Unmasking Safety Map
A worksheet from ND Hive. Companion to “What Is Unmasking?”
What this is
Unmasking is not “be your authentic self everywhere.” That advice is dangerous. Some spaces are not safe for the unmasked you. The work is mapping which spaces ARE safe, and starting there.
This worksheet helps you build a personal unmasking map: which spaces, which people, which behaviors, which order. Takes 15 minutes.
The principle
Unmasking is not all-or-nothing. It’s choosing one mask at a time, in one safe space at a time, and noticing what happens. You can lower a mask and put it back on. You are not committing to anything permanent.
Part 1: Audit your spaces by safety level
For each space, rate the safety of being unmasked there (1 = dangerous, 5 = fully safe).
| Space | Safety (1-5) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Work / professional | _____ | _____ |
| Family of origin | _____ | _____ |
| Romantic partner | _____ | _____ |
| Closest friends | _____ | _____ |
| New social settings | _____ | _____ |
| Healthcare settings | _____ | _____ |
| ND community spaces | _____ | _____ |
| Online ND communities | _____ | _____ |
| Alone | _____ | _____ |
Identify your TOP 2 safest spaces. Those are where unmasking starts.
Safest space 1: ___________________________________________
Safest space 2: ___________________________________________
Part 2: Inventory what’s underneath the mask
What would you do / say / feel / look like if you weren’t masking?
Body
- Stims you’d let out: ___________
- Postures you’d let your body fall into: ___________
- Eye contact you’d stop performing: ___________
Communication
- Special interests you’d talk about: ___________
- Conversations you’d opt out of: ___________
- Volume / pace your voice would actually be: ___________
Emotional
- Feelings you’d let show: ___________
- Reactions you’d stop suppressing: ___________
Identity
- Things you actually like and currently hide: ___________
- Things you currently perform that you don’t actually feel: ___________
Part 3: Pick ONE small mask to lower
In one of your safest spaces, pick ONE mask to lower this week.
The mask:
___________________________________________
The space:
___________________________________________
What “lowering it” looks like specifically:
___________________________________________
(Examples: stim with your hands during a Zoom call when off-camera. Wear your noise-canceling headphones in a coffee shop. Talk about your special interest with one friend who already knows. Stop performing eye contact with your partner. Let yourself rock during a podcast.)
Part 4: The post-unmasking check
After you try it, run this check.
What happened?
___________________________________________
How did your body feel during?
___________________________________________
How did your body feel after?
___________________________________________
Did anyone respond? How?
___________________________________________
Do you want to do it again?
Yes · Same context · Different context · Not yet
Part 5: The dangerous-space rule
Some spaces are NOT safe to unmask in. Your map needs to identify those too.
Spaces I will NOT unmask in (right now):
___________________________________________
Why those spaces are not safe:
___________________________________________
How I will protect myself in those spaces:
___________________________________________
This is not failure. Masking in unsafe spaces is a survival skill. Knowing WHICH spaces are unsafe is more important than dropping the mask everywhere.
Reminder
Unmasking is a choice you make, in spaces you’ve evaluated, with people who can hold it. It is not a moral imperative. It is not always the goal.
The goal is to have at least ONE space where the real you exists. From there, the map grows. But you don’t owe your unmasked self to spaces that have shown you they cannot hold it.
You are not less authentic for masking in unsafe spaces. You are alive because of those masks. The work is keeping the masks AND building safer spaces. Both. Not one or the other.
