Body doubling can come out of your FSA card. Yes, really.

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.

You are staring at a blank Google Doc at 11pm in your dorm, roommate asleep, paper due at 8am, and the only thing that has ever made you actually start is having someone else on a screen also typing. That is not a quirky habit. That is a documented executive function tool, and there is a decent chance your FSA or HSA card will pay for it.

What this actually is

Body doubling is working alongside another person, live or on video, while you both do your own separate tasks. The presence of another brain doing focused work regulates your nervous system and makes task initiation easier. Some virtual body doubling services and ADHD coaching platforms now qualify as eligible medical expenses under FSA/HSA rules when tied to a diagnosis or treatment plan, especially when a doctor or provider writes a Letter of Medical Necessity.

How it shows up in your life on campus

You can read the syllabus, understand the assignment, even want to do it, and still sit there for two hours doing nothing because starting requires a spark your brain will not generate alone. This is why the library reading room works when your dorm room does not: other bodies, other focus, ambient accountability. It is also why solo all-nighters spiral. No structure, no witness, no start.

What actually helps

First, get a Letter of Medical Necessity from your campus disability services provider, a therapist, or your prescribing doctor. It should name your ADHD or autism diagnosis and state that body doubling or coaching support is part of your treatment. Second, save receipts and invoices from any virtual body doubling platform or ADHD coach, itemized, not just a bank statement line. Third, check your FSA/HSA administrator's eligible expense list before you pay, some require pre-approval for services outside the usual doctor visit or prescription bucket. Fourth, if a paid service feels like too much right now, free versions exist: library study rooms, Discord study servers, a friend on FaceTime doing their own homework while you do yours. The mechanism is the same whether it costs money or not.

One move today

Email your disability services office and ask directly: can you write a Letter of Medical Necessity for body doubling or coaching support, and do you know which local providers already accept FSA/HSA. That one email starts the paper trail you need before you spend a dollar.

Bottom line: your brain needing a witness to start working is not a character flaw, it is a known ADHD mechanism, and your insurance-adjacent dollars can legally help cover the fix.
