A companion to the main ADHD article, written for first responders.
You can run into a burning building without a flicker of hesitation and still let your incident reports pile up for three weeks straight. That’s not laziness, that’s a task-initiation problem, and there’s a real tool for it that your insurance will actually help pay for.
What this actually is
Body doubling means working alongside someone else, in person or on a call, purely to jump-start a task you cannot make yourself start alone. With a letter of medical necessity tied to a diagnosis like ADHD, it’s FSA or HSA eligible, meaning you can use pre-tax dollars for coaching or dedicated body-doubling services instead of quietly eating the cost yourself or, more likely, never getting the help at all.
How it shows up
If you run ND yourself, you already know the pattern cold: adrenaline gets you through the actual call cleanly, then admin work, incident reports, continuing-ed modules sit completely untouched because there’s no external pressure forcing you to start, no dispatcher assigning it a priority code. That’s a real neurological gap in the initiation system, not a character flaw you should be able to muscle through on willpower, and body doubling directly closes that gap. In the field, you’ll also see the flip side in people you respond to: someone mid-crisis who can’t initiate a simple self-care task, get dressed, make the call, leave the house, isn’t refusing your instructions out of stubbornness, they’re stuck at the exact same initiation barrier you hit with your own reports every single shift. Recognizing that reframes “noncompliant” into “needs a second presence in order to actually move.”
What actually helps
Get evaluated and, if diagnosed, ask your provider directly for a letter of medical necessity naming body doubling specifically, then use FSA or HSA funds for it rather than paying full price or skipping it entirely. Find a body-doubling service or even a coworker willing to sit on a call while you both knock out reports side by side. Stop assuming this is a discipline issue you’re supposed to white-knuckle through solo, since shift work already strips your executive reserves down to nothing most weeks. And on a call with someone frozen mid-task, try simply staying present and narrating the next single step instead of stacking on more commands they can’t process, then notice how much faster the scene actually moves.
One move today
Book one body-doubling session this week, even just a video call with a friend doing their own paperwork nearby, and finally knock out the report that’s been sitting the longest.
You don’t need more willpower. You need a witness. That’s a real, billable, evidence-based fix, not an excuse.
