ND OutLoud episode. Recorded October 3, 2025. Watch above or read the full conversation below.
If you have ever wondered why every planner, app, and productivity hack collapses within two weeks, this short episode gives you the missing variable: other people. Danielle Ralston lays out the numbers behind neurodivergent isolation, including how much more likely ADHD adults are to be fired or quit impulsively, how often autistic adults end up unemployed or underemployed despite being highly educated, and why neurodivergent entrepreneurs burn out at such high rates, with isolation named as a driving cause.
Then she gets practical. Danielle tells the story of managing a mostly neurodivergent corporate team that was quietly drowning until they started working on calls together, and task completion jumped. That is body doubling: co-regulated accountability, not “finish this or lose your job” accountability. She explains what peer-based community engagement does for emotional regulation and task completion, and what members typically report within their first two weeks of working alongside people who get it. This one is for ADHD and AuDHD adults who are tired of being angry at themselves, stuck in shame spirals, and buying another app that will not fix the actual problem. The takeaway is blunt: you do not need another task manager, you need an environment where getting unstuck happens together.
What you will hear
- The employment reality: Danielle cites figures that ADHD adults are 60 percent more likely to be fired and three times more likely to quit impulsively than neurotypical coworkers.
- Why an estimated 85 percent of autistic adults are unemployed or underemployed even when highly educated, and how living “in a void” feeds that.
- Neurodivergent entrepreneurs and burnout: the isolation link, plus the overlap with chronic illness that makes burnout even more likely.
- Why productivity tools keep failing ND brains, and why the answer is environment, not another app.
- The corporate team story: how getting a mostly neurodivergent team on live calls together dramatically raised task completion through co-regulated accountability.
- What research on peer-based community engagement shows for emotional regulation and task completion, and what members notice within about 14 days.

Who ND OutLoud is and what this session gives you
Hello there. I’m Danielle Ralston. I am the founder and head coach here at ND OutLoud. What is ND OutLoud? ND OutLoud is a team of neurodivergent coaches. We are neurodivergent, every single one of us. TBI, PTSD, ADHD, autism, bipolar disorder, all of the things. We also have a passion for supporting others like us, so you don’t have to struggle like we did in our past. We have all taken trainings and certifications so that we can support you in living a better life and upgrading all of the things that are frustrating about your life.
What is this session going to give you? Actionable tips. Yes, we’re going to talk about our programs and the things we offer, but I want you to walk away with something actionable for something that is overwhelming, frustrating, or just plain annoying you right now in your life. Or, if you’re a parent or a spouse of someone neurodivergent, something to help them as well. I want you to walk away with something today.
Okay. Good morning, I hope you’re having an awesome day today. This is Danielle with ND OutLoud and ND Hive. We are looking to go live every day. Remember, I said I’m going to challenge myself to do this every single day for the next 60 days, and I am sharing links everywhere, trying to let everybody know that I am live in all the places.
The numbers behind neurodivergent isolation: jobs, burnout, and chronic illness
So today we’re talking about community, and why community really is so important when you are ADHD, autistic, or otherwise neurodivergent. And I’m naming them separately because most of our community is ADHD. I’m going to say roughly 75 percent of our community is ADHD, 25 percent is autistic, and then we have a lot of other neurodivergence as well. And no, I didn’t do the math right in my head. Whatever. We are talking about all of it as a whole.
So why is community so, so important when you are neurodivergent? Did you know that ADHD adults are 60 percent more likely to be fired, and three times more likely to quit impulsively, than their neurotypical coworkers? That’s a really big deal. Sixty percent more likely to be fired. That’s terrible. Those are things we really need to be paying attention to, so we can help each other be more employable and stay employable long term.
Eighty-five percent of autistic adults are unemployed or underemployed, even when they’re highly educated and highly capable. Why is that? Because we tend to live in a void, and that’s a big problem for us. Neurodivergent entrepreneurs are 72 percent more likely to experience severe burnout, and almost 90 percent of that group cites isolation as the reason they get so burned out. And 82 percent of us who are neurodivergent also have chronic illnesses, which leads to burnout, addiction, being unemployed or underemployed, things like that.
And productivity tools just don’t work for us. We know that. We have so many reasons why productivity tools don’t work. We have audio, visual, and spatial learning disabilities. We have executive dysfunction. We have learning disabilities like dyslexia. We also have things like not understanding how to work with our own brains. A lot of us really struggle to learn how our own brain works.
Body doubling: the corporate team story and co-regulated accountability
So how can we help each other? You’re going to hear me say this over and over again: my keys to success. My first key to success is body doubling. And when I say body doubling, I’m body doubling right now to make sure that I show up and do these lives for the next 60 days. I body double in my business. I’m an entrepreneur, and I’ve been an entrepreneur for twenty-some years. If I don’t body double, I don’t find success.
My first ten-plus years as an entrepreneur, I didn’t body double. I didn’t know what that was, I wasn’t doing it. I went back to the corporate world, and in my corporate job I constantly had a team around me. My team was struggling, because they were 90 percent neurodivergent, and they were struggling to get tasks done. So I learned that if we got on Skype calls, yes, that shows my age, if we got on a video call together, or just an audio call together, we were 95 percent more likely to complete tasks throughout the day.
Why did we complete tasks? Because we were body doubling. We had accountability, and it was co-regulated accountability. Not “if you don’t get this done, you’re going to lose your job” accountability. It was: “Oh, what are you working on?” “Oh, I’m going to work on…” “Yeah, I need to work on that thing too. Let’s dive in and get it done together.” There is emotional regulation, body regulation, and mental regulation when you body double together. When you’re in a neurodivergent environment and a safe space, you’re much more likely to get things done. You’re less overwhelmed. You’re less burnt out.
There was a study in the Journal of Attention Disorders, I think it was 2023, that showed peer-based community engagement led to measurable improvements in emotional regulation, task completion, and overall well-being in less than a couple of months. In our community, in ND Hive, we actually see it in less than 14 days. We see people start saying, “Oh my gosh, I have gotten so much more done this week than I ever have in my business,” or “than I ever have at my day job.” It’s a measurable change you can see when you’re in a community with other people who get it. Body doubling is a big part of it, along with the co-regulation and co-accountability.
You do not need another app, you need people who get it
We don’t need another planner. We don’t need another organization or task management app. We need community. Community really is a huge key to success for us. And it’s always sad to me that ADHDers get so frustrated, so angry with themselves, and so overwhelmed all of the time. You don’t need to be. Just by being in the right environment, not isolating, not being stuck in your own head, not getting stuck in shame spirals, not getting stuck in executive dysfunction, not getting stuck in procrastination. We have so many things we can get stuck in as neurodivergent people.
When we find people who can help us not be stuck, it’s not necessarily them doing the job for us, doing the paperwork for us, or making that doctor’s appointment for us. It’s somebody saying, “Oh my gosh, I get it, I struggle with that too. Hey, I have to make a doctor’s appointment too. Let’s both do it at the same time.” “Hey, my closet is a mess and I need to clean it. Want to do that together?” “Hey, I have my case study notes and I need to get my notes into the system. What are you working on?” It’s being in a space where everybody, one, gets why we struggle to do things, without judgment; two, is also struggling to get things done; and three, is there to support us in finishing up.
So come join us in a community. We have group coaching calls every week, and in those calls you get real coaching, answers to your questions the way your brain needs them. It’s not just me; it’s Shay and Tara and Rebecca, and we’re all there to help you. Our community members help each other too. They’ll answer the question you might ask a coach, because they were just dealing with that yesterday and this is what worked for them. So you’re going to hear not just the tools I know of, but the tools everybody knows of. And then we have body doubling all day long, every single day, plus workbooks and trainings. And if you need a resource I don’t already have, I’ll create it for you, because I love creating workbooks and checklists and things like that.
You absolutely can find success in every single day when you have the support that you need. I hope you have an awesome day today.
