Sales Strategies for ADHD Entrepreneurs

ND OutLoud episode. Recorded November 6, 2023. Watch above or read the full conversation below.

Sales advice built for neurotypical consistency machines falls apart in an ADHD business. In this live session, Danielle lays out the sales approach she has run for nearly 30 years as an entrepreneur: daily visibility in 15 minutes a day, instead of hard closes, funnels you cannot maintain, or ad budgets you do not have. She is blunt about the math on paid ads, why anything under a serious monthly spend is debatable, and about what actually generates clients for service businesses, product sellers, and crafters alike: being recognized, repeatedly, by the people who will eventually need you.

The receipts are specific. A holiday side project selling sarcastic graphic downloads brought in about 2,500 dollars with no ads, purely on visibility. Relaunching her marketing agency after a year away took one single post, and roughly 5,000 dollars in sales followed in under a day, because people remembered her. She also shares what a hundred coach interviews revealed about why the polished influencer playbook has stopped converting, and why authenticity and relationship building are outperforming it. If you are an ADHD or AuDHD adult trying to sell anything, services, products, digital downloads, this is a sales system sized for a brain that cannot sustain performative consistency but can absolutely show up for 15 minutes a day.

What you will hear

  • The 15-minute Power Hour strategy: why daily visibility, not daily selling, is the engine of an ADHD-friendly sales system.
  • Danielle’s take on ad spend: below roughly 1,500 dollars a month, sustained over multiple months, the return on small ad budgets is genuinely debatable.
  • Real numbers: about 2,500 dollars in holiday graphic sales with zero ads, and about 5,000 dollars in agency sales from one relaunch post, because visibility compounds.
  • What interviews with a hundred coaches revealed: the Instagram-perfect, seven-figure-lifestyle playbook is no longer closing, and authenticity is.
  • Why you should not want everybody as a client: attracting your ideal client versus collecting red-flag clients by copying someone else’s content.
  • The long game: clients may not need you for two years, but consistent visibility means you are who they call the moment they do, no convincing required.

Sales has to work differently with an ADHD brain

I hope you’re having an amazing day today. We’re talking about sales strategies for ADHD today, all of the things that affect how we do sales, because we need to do sales very, very differently. This is one of the things I teach, and we have a freebie on the website about it, that 15-minute Power Hour strategy I’ve talked about for years. I’m going to drop the link below for anybody who hasn’t already seen it, so you can sign up for it while I’m thinking about it.

How can you do sales, be consistent, not self-sabotage, not get frustrated with yourself, and do all of the things you need to do as a business owner? Because “I need clients, I know I need clients,” we hear this all the time from our clients. And then you get clients, and you don’t know how to create the processes you need to keep up with having clients. In our goal setting every month, we talk about nurturing, lead generation, sales, delivery, and what’s important to do in your business every single day. The sheet we use consistently in goal setting, for deciding what to do for sales day to day, comes down to knowing how to get visible. That’s the 15-minute Power Hour strategy: get visible every single day. That visibility is how you grow your business.

The honest math on ad spend

Now, if you have large money for ad spend, we can have a slightly different discussion about maybe not doing it quite this way. But if you don’t have a large ad spend, and I’m talking 1,500 dollars plus a month, anything under that is debatable. There is a lot of debate, even coming from the big ad platforms themselves, about whether spending less than that on ads is actually helpful and gives you a good return as a business owner. And let’s face it: not many of us have 1,500 dollars to spend on ads every single month. And it’s not just one month. It takes multiple months to get a good result from ads. So how are you going to get visible instead?

What visibility actually means (and what it doesn’t)

You have to be visible if you’re a service-based business owner or you sell products. One of our members discovered that going live every week is the thing that gets her more sales. I don’t care what you do: if you sell anything to somebody, your services, somebody else’s services, digital products, homemade crafts, whatever, being visible is necessary. Honestly, that’s what the big retail brands do. They are extremely visible in their world, to their ideal clients. Do you know how to be visible like that to yours? Being visible does not mean selling in every single post. It just does not. It means being recognized by your ideal clients.

I had something very cool happen over the last month. I’ve opened a new marketing agency, and I keep saying “reopened,” “relaunched,” but it’s a new agency. And because I was so visible before, as a previous agency owner and a trainer who taught people how to do marketing, I have had to do hardly anything to get visible for this one. I spent so long doing this exact thing, the strategy I dropped the link for below. This is how I built multiple six-figure businesses: IT businesses, marketing agencies, a coaching business. This strategy works for all of it.

Even craft businesses. A few years ago, when I was really exhausted, I made a bunch of sarcastic graphics for t-shirts and different things for Christmas. It was just the graphics, just the files, sold as downloads for people to put on their own shirts or whatever they wanted. I made about 2,500 bucks, just by getting visible for it. That was without any ads on the platform. It’s possible, just by doing this exact strategy, to get what you need for your business. You just have to show up consistently.

And here’s the thing: I haven’t shown up consistently in marketing for about a year, and I’m doing this under a different name, different logo, all of it. People remember my visibility from before. I have done one post about it. That’s it. And I got about 5K in sales in less than a day from that one post, because people remember what I did before. Visibility is the key to good sales. All you have to do is talk to people. We love to tell stories, we love to be with people, and even if you’re an introvert, doing these things is not a huge taxing thing. Fifteen minutes a day is all it takes.

And Jessica, I see you, poor Jessica has a hard time being visible because her local groups online are awful. Yes, but Jessica, you’ve created other ways to be visible: dropping off flyers at the local nursing homes and community centers. You’re being visible in your neighborhood. It’s the same strategy with one slight tweak. Local or online, just be visible. I’ve done this time and time again: going to conferences, going to networking events. Just be visible.

Leads come from relationships, not hard closes

So it takes visibility, and it takes creating leads, creating a passionate response in your ideal client. And you’re not going to do that with calls to action. You’re not going to do that with hard sales. You’re going to do that by building relationships. This is becoming more and more true. I just spoke at a huge summit about how to sell with a busy brain, an overwhelmed brain, and through a marketing group I interviewed a hundred coaches on what’s working for them and what’s not, where they’re failing in sales. A lot of “high ticket” coaches, and I’m putting that in quotation marks, are not closing what they used to close. There are seven-figure coaches, a huge slew of them right now, who aren’t even six-figure coaches anymore. Why are their previous strategies not working? That influencer strategy, looking beautiful, living the seven-figure life, the picture-perfect covers and content, is not working. Not at the level it was before.

What’s working? Authenticity. Getting to know somebody. Building a relationship. Those are the things that work, and that’s what the whole sales visibility framework I teach is based on. Your ideal client will be so excited to find the person who offers exactly what they want and need. Our job is not to turn as many people as we can into clients. It’s not. You want to make the people who are in desperate need of you into clients. Not everybody. Not everybody is your ideal client, and you don’t want everybody to be your client, because you’ll end up with red-flag clients, you’ll end up with issues. You want the people who are building relationships with you, who are getting to know you, who are investing their time and then their money in you. Those are your best clients. I’ve had clients for 15 years now who are still clients, who have jokingly threatened me if I ever try to leave. I tried to pass them off to somebody else once, and they came right back. I attract who wants to work with me. I am the thing that attracts them, and that’s what you have to get used to in your business: be willing to be attractive to your ideal client.

Be you, not a copy of a seven-figure coach

How do you get attractive to your ideal client? Show up. Be visible. That’s it. That’s how you attract your ideal client: be visible, and be yourself. Do not copy that seven-figure coach whose content you think is awesome. Copying that coach is not going to get you your ideal client. You might attract her audience, but her audience is not your ideal client. And don’t attract my audience either, my audience is not your ideal client. Not everybody is your client, nor do you want them to be. I don’t want 50,000 people inside our community if they aren’t my ideal client, if they don’t absolutely love working with me and don’t love being part of a true community that supports each other. If you don’t want that, this is not the place for you, and that’s perfectly fine. I’m not everybody’s cup of tea. But I want to attract who needs me, who wants what I have to offer, who is exactly the person who needs me in that moment.

And they don’t know they need you until the second they need you. If you aren’t constantly visible, constantly sharing the same things, consistent in your message and who you are and what you do, your message, not somebody else’s message… Not “oh, I love that mindset coach, I want to copy her content and rewrite it for myself.” It’s fine to use that for inspiration, “I should write a piece of content kind of like that,” great, do that, we all do that, heck, that’s half of what AI chatbots are now. But write your own content. Be you. Your clients want to work with you. You are the ideal person for them in the moment they need you.

Consistency until the moment they need you

They may not need you this week. They may not need you six months from now. They may not need you for two years. But if you are consistent over that two-year period, they’re going to remember you exist, and they’re going to reach out and say, “You’re who I need in this moment.” I had that happen a few weeks ago. I got a new client who was desperate, in a truly desperate moment. I had talked to her years ago, two, maybe three years ago, offered her my services, and it wasn’t a good time. She wasn’t ready. She didn’t need me then. But she needed me in that moment, and she hired me immediately, on the spot. No arguments, no working for the sale, nothing.

I’ve learned this over the years, because I keep saying I’ve been doing this 25 years, and my husband reminds me we’ve been married almost 30, we’ll have been married 30 years in February. I have been an entrepreneur with real, profitable businesses for just about 30 years. The strategy I teach in that sales framework is a strategy I learned when I was 19 years old, working in corporate sales. It carried me through before there was internet. It carried me through physical, in-person sales. It carried me through massive deals with big businesses and corporations. It has built me multiple six-figure small businesses. This can build you a business, and it just takes 15 minutes a day. Get into 15 minutes a day, and you can change your business very quickly. Ask Lauren, this is something Lauren has used, and she is just about at capacity, or deciding whether to expand her capacity.
