Your roommate isn’t ignoring you. You’re speaking different languages.

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.

You said "I'm fine" and meant "I am drowning but can't find the words yet." Your roommate took it literally and went to a party without you. Now you're both hurt, and neither of you actually did anything wrong here.

What this actually is

The ND/NT translation gap is the mismatch between how a neurodivergent brain communicates, often literal, direct, or delayed under overwhelm, and how a neurotypical brain expects communication, often implied, softened, or read through tone and timing. It's not that either person is bad at relationships. It's that you're running different operating systems and nobody ever installed a translator between you.

How it shows up

Your NT roommate hints at wanting help and you miss it entirely because you needed it stated plainly, in words, not implied through a sigh. You say something blunt in a group project and get read as rude when you meant efficient and were trying to save everyone time. You go quiet when overwhelmed and your friend reads that as anger instead of shutdown, so a fight starts over something that was never actually an argument. A professor's vague feedback like "needs more depth" leaves you paralyzed because you needed the actual specifics, not the vibe, and now the deadline is tomorrow.

What actually helps

Say the literal thing out loud even when it feels too direct: "when you said that, did you mean X or Y, I want to make sure I understood correctly." Ask people to give you instructions and feedback in plain, specific language, and tell them why: "I process better with exact words than with tone or hints." When you shut down, send one text later explaining what actually happened: "I went quiet because I was overwhelmed, not because I was mad at you." Find your ND people on campus, a club, a disability services peer group, somewhere the translation gap doesn't exist because you're already speaking the same native language. One more tool worth building: a shared shorthand with your closest people, a single phrase like translation check, that either of you can say anytime a conversation feels like it's going sideways for no clear reason. Notice, too, that the gap runs both ways, an NT friend translating for you is doing real work, and naming that out loud, thank you for spelling that out for me, keeps the relationship equal instead of one-sided.

One move today

Pick one relationship where a misunderstanding is sitting unresolved, and send one message naming the gap directly: "I think we read that differently, here's what I actually meant by it."

The gap isn't a flaw in either of you, it's just an untranslated sentence sitting between two people who both actually care.
