A companion to the main ADHD article, written for professors and higher-education professionals.
You have a color coded grading tracker, three project management tools, and a syllabus deadline you personally missed last week. Meanwhile a student in your seminar just told you their planner app is, quote, a graveyard.
What this actually is
An ADHD coaching platform works by replacing willpower based tools with relationship based accountability, someone or something that actually notices when you stall and nudges you back in, rather than a static app waiting to be opened.
How it shows up
If you run ND yourself, you likely have a stack of productivity tools you built during a burst of hyperfocus and now quietly ignore, while telling colleagues you are just disorganized. The stack failed because it assumed consistent self monitoring, which is the very function that is inconsistent. In your students, the same pattern shows up as someone who bought a planner, built a Notion dashboard, downloaded three apps, and is still missing deadlines, and reads to you as unmotivated when they are actually stuck without external structure.
What actually helps
For yourself, stop adding tools and add a person: a colleague you trade weekly deadline check ins with, a coach, or a standing accountability call does more than another app ever will. For your students, build external accountability into the course itself instead of expecting them to build their own: staged deadlines with small check ins rather than one final due date, a required draft submission two weeks out, or optional but visible office hours check ins tied to specific milestones. Recommend, do not just tolerate, ADHD coaching or accountability groups through disability services when a student describes trying everything and nothing sticking. Design feedback loops that come from outside the student's own memory, since asking someone with executive dysfunction to remember to check their own progress is asking the disability to solve itself.
One move this term
Build one staged check in point into your next assignment, a low stakes outline or draft due before the final deadline, graded lightly but required. That single external checkpoint does more for a struggling student than any productivity lecture.
The bottom line: nobody's ADHD was ever solved by a better app, it was solved by a better loop with another person in it, so build that loop into your course and your own week.
