🧭 The Three-Way Pattern Recognition Quiz
A quiz from ND Hive. Companion to “AUDHD vs ADHD vs Autism”
What this is
ADHD, autism, and AUDHD are three distinct neurological patterns that share surface features and confuse most adults trying to recognize themselves. This quiz separates the three by asking the questions that genuinely differentiate them.
Takes 7 minutes. The result helps you know which Authority pages to dig into next.
How this works
For each question, pick the answer that fits best. Each maps to one of three patterns. Some questions allow “all three” if both wirings are active. Add up the totals at the end.
The questions
1. When you walk into a room, what do you notice first?
- A. The energy of the people. Who’s interesting. Where’s the action. → ADHD
- B. The lighting, the temperature, the textures, the layout. → Autism
- C. Both immediately, simultaneously, with no filter. → AUDHD
2. How do you talk?
- A. Fast. Tangential. I lose my thread and circle back. → ADHD
- B. Precisely. Carefully. I take literal interpretations of what people say. → Autism
- C. I switch between fast/scattered AND precise/literal depending on context. → AUDHD
3. What does it feel like when plans change?
- A. Annoying but I roll with it. → ADHD
- B. Disorienting. I need to recalibrate. → Autism
- C. Both. I roll with it AND need recalibration. The contradiction is exhausting. → AUDHD
4. How do you experience your “interests”?
- A. They cycle. Six months on a topic, then a new obsession. → ADHD
- B. Lifelong. Specific. Deep. Often few in number. → Autism
- C. Both. Lifelong deep interests AND a churn of new shorter ones. → AUDHD
5. How are you in conversations with new people?
- A. Energetic, charming, lose track of time. → ADHD
- B. Performing carefully, exhausting, want to leave. → Autism
- C. I look ADHD-charming but I’m depleting at autism speed. → AUDHD
6. What’s the cost of your social masking?
- A. Mild. I bounce back. → ADHD (often less masking required)
- B. High. I crash for days. → Autism
- C. Catastrophic. People don’t believe how spent I am because I look fine on the outside. → AUDHD
7. How are you with structure and routine?
- A. I crave it but cannot maintain it. I always break my own routines. → ADHD
- B. I have specific rituals I keep. Disruption is destabilizing. → Autism
- C. I have rigid rituals AND I sabotage routines. Both happen weekly. → AUDHD
8. How do you experience identity?
- A. I’m me. I shift contexts but I know who I am. → ADHD (or none)
- B. I have a strong inner sense of self that I rarely share with the outside world. → Autism
- C. I’m not sure who the “real me” is. I’m different in every context. → AUDHD
9. How does burnout show up?
- A. Boredom, restlessness, “I need a new project.” → ADHD
- B. Sensory overwhelm, social shutdown, “I cannot do another conversation.” → Autism
- C. Total collapse. The “real me” goes offline for weeks. Recovery is incomplete. → AUDHD
10. When you read about ADHD or autism alone, what’s most common?
- A. ADHD reading: “Yes, exactly.” Autism reading: “Some of this, not all.” → ADHD-dominant
- B. Autism reading: “Yes, exactly.” ADHD reading: “Some of this, not all.” → Autism-dominant
- C. Both readings feel half-right. Neither captures the whole. → AUDHD
Scoring
Count your responses:
| Pattern | Count |
|---|---|
| ADHD answers | _____ |
| Autism answers | _____ |
| AUDHD (both) answers | _____ |
Interpretation
ADHD-dominant (6+ ADHD answers, low AUDHD): Read “What is ADHD?” and “What is Executive Dysfunction?” next.
Autism-dominant (6+ Autism answers, low AUDHD): Read “What is Sensory Overload?” and “What is Masking?” next.
AUDHD pattern (4+ AUDHD answers OR roughly even ADHD/Autism scores with multiple “both” answers): This is your map. Read “What is AUDHD?” and “What is PDA?” next. The contradiction-engine experience is yours.
Mixed / unclear (low scores across all three): You may be navigating something different, CPTSD, sensory processing without ASD/ADHD, anxiety, depression. Worth exploring with a clinician.
What this means practically
The three patterns require different fundamental approaches:
- ADHD-dominant: Dopamine, novelty, body doubling, external scaffolding. Strategies are mostly stimulant-friendly.
- Autism-dominant: Routine, predictability, sensory protection, reduced demands. Strategies are mostly low-stimulation.
- AUDHD: The contradiction is the point. Strategies need to honor both sides simultaneously. Routines that build in novelty. Predictable environments that allow stim. Body doubling that respects sensory limits.
If you’re AUDHD, most of the ADHD-only or autism-only advice will only get you halfway. That’s why so much advice has felt “almost but not quite” right your whole life.
