A companion to the main ADHD article, written for college students.
You've had the reading open for forty minutes. The cursor blinks in an empty document. Your roommate left twenty minutes ago and somehow that made the silence louder.
What this actually is
Body doubling is working alongside another person, in person or on a call, while each of you does your own separate task. Nobody helps you write the paper. Their presence alone changes how your brain accesses focus. This is not accountability theater. It is a real shift in activation for ADHD and autistic brains that struggle to self start without external input.
How it shows up
In college this is the gap between staring at a syllabus alone in your dorm at 11pm and actually opening the reading at 2pm because a friend is sitting across the table doing their own thing. It is why a study group where nobody talks still gets more done than a solo session. It is why you can knock out an email to a professor in a busy coffee shop but not in your quiet room. An empty room is not neutral for your brain. It is actively working against you.
What actually helps
Book a recurring library slot with one or two people, same time weekly, no talking required, just parallel work.
Use a virtual body doubling app or a Discord focus room for late nights when campus buildings are locked.
Text someone, starting my reading now, you in, before the task you're dreading. The witness effect works even over text, even if they never reply.
Ask disability services whether a quiet study room or a study partner arrangement can go into your accommodation plan. This is a legitimate access need, not a favor you're asking for.
One move today
Text one person right now and ask them to sit with you, even on a video call, for the next thirty minutes while you both work on separate things. Don't wait until you feel ready. Ready is not a prerequisite here, the other person is the mechanism.
Your focus was never the problem. The wrong environment was.
