Why the report gets done in the rig and nowhere else

A companion to the main ADHD article, written for first responders.

You can write a full incident report in the cab of the rig with your partner beside you and stare blankly at the same form alone at the kitchen table three hours later. That gap has a name, and it isn’t discipline.

What this actually is

Body doubling is completing a task while someone else is present doing their own thing, with little or no talking involved. It supplies external structure to a brain that cannot reliably self start certain tasks alone, especially low reward, high friction ones like paperwork after a long shift.

How it shows up

In you, if you run ADHD or AuDHD, it’s training records that get done at the station with a coworker nearby and pile up untouched at home. Shift work and adrenaline cycles hammer the exact system this depends on, so by the time you’re off shift and alone, the tank that lets you self initiate is often already empty, not from laziness but from actual depletion.

In the field, the same mechanism explains a lot of what reads as noncompliance. A person overloaded at a chaotic scene, lights, sirens, multiple voices, often cannot execute even a simple instruction alone in that moment. Standing calmly beside them while they do one small step, buckling a seatbelt, walking to the stretcher, frequently works faster than repeating the command louder from a distance.

What actually helps

Pair your own dreaded admin tasks with a coworker on purpose, station reports, cert renewals, training logs, instead of saving them for solo hours when your tank is already empty. Tell your household this is a real strategy so a partner doing paperwork next to you stops being read as babysitting. In the field, when someone freezes, try presence and one step at a time instead of volume and repetition, since a calm body nearby often unlocks more than words do. Build this into your crew’s culture on purpose rather than treating it as something to hide.

One move today

Pick the one form or log you keep avoiding solo and do it next to a coworker or your partner today, even without talking.

This isn’t dependency. It’s one of the only tools that reliably restarts a stalled brain, on either side of the call.
