You’ve got a med pass to prep, a family demanding answers, and a brain that’s already three tasks ahead of your hands. Here’s the one tool that actually closes that gap.
What this actually is
Body doubling means doing a task while another person works nearby on their own thing. It isn’t collaboration and it isn’t supervision. For ADHD and autistic brains, another person’s presence supplies external structure the brain’s own executive function can’t reliably generate on demand.
How it shows up
In you, if you run this way: you can task-switch through a chaotic med pass under interruption after interruption, then completely stall trying to finish your own care plan alone in a quiet break room. Silence and solitude, the very things that sound restful, are often where your focus falls apart, not where it recovers.
In your patients: the newly diagnosed diabetic who can demonstrate insulin injection perfectly with you standing there, then never does it alone at home, isn’t failing the teaching. He’s missing the presence that made the task possible in the first place. Recognizing that changes your entire follow-up plan.
What actually helps
Use real-time pairing for your own dreaded tasks. Chart next to a coworker, call a friend to sit on speaker while you do paperwork, join a virtual body doubling session on a break.
Build presence into patient teaching, don’t just teach and walk away. Ask who’s home with them, and coach that person into being a body double for the task, not a doer of the task.
Separate body doubling from dependency in your own head. It’s a legitimate structural accommodation, the same category as a med reminder alarm, not a sign you can’t handle your job.
Teach the concept explicitly to patients managing chronic self-care. Give them the language: “this works better with someone else in the room,” so they can ask for it instead of quietly failing and blaming themselves.
One move today
Pick the one task on your unit you personally avoid every shift and ask a coworker to sit with you for it once this week. Just once. Notice the difference.
The fix was never more willpower, it was proximity. Stop treating that as a weakness and start prescribing it.
