A companion to the main ADHD article, written for professors and higher-education professionals.
The stack of essays has been sitting on your desk for eleven days. You know exactly what needs to happen. Knowing has never once made it happen.
What this actually is
Body doubling is working alongside another person, in person or virtually, on separate independent tasks. Nobody is grading your papers with you. Their presence changes the activation threshold in a brain that struggles to self-start without an external cue. It is a documented tool for ADHD and autistic adults, not a study gimmick for undergrads.
How it shows up
If you run neurodivergent yourself, this explains why you can knock out three hours of grading in a coffee shop full of strangers but not in your own silent office. It explains why a closed-door writing retreat with colleagues produces the manuscript revision your solo Sunday never did. And it explains the student in your class who never turns in a draft alone but comes alive in a writing center session with a tutor sitting beside them. That student is not unmotivated. Their brain needs a co-regulating presence to start, the same way yours might.
What actually helps
Build a body-doubling option into your own week: a standing co-working block with a colleague, a campus writing group, or even a video call where you both mute and just work.
Offer office hours as working sessions, not just Q&A. Tell students they can bring their laptop and write in the room with you present, even silently.
Point stuck students toward the writing center, library co-working spaces, or peer study rooms, and name body doubling explicitly so it doesn't read as remedial.
Build low-stakes checkpoints into assignments, a rough draft due to a peer, a paragraph shared in a discussion board, so isolation isn't the default mode for every solo project.
One move this term
Add one line to your syllabus or your own calendar: a recurring co-working block, for you or for students, where presence alone does the work that willpower can't.
The student who can't start alone and the colleague who can't start alone are running the same brain wiring. Neither one needs more discipline. Both need a witness.
