You’ve pulled an all nighter of studying that felt impossible alone and effortless in a study group doing nothing to help you. That wasn’t motivation. That was body doubling, and it has a mechanism worth understanding instead of dismissing as a coincidence.
What this actually is
Body doubling is completing a task while another person is present and doing their own task, in the same room or over video, with minimal interaction. It works by supplying external accountability and structure to systems, task initiation and sustained attention, that some brains cannot reliably self generate, particularly under fatigue or low reward.
How it shows up
In you, if your brain runs ADHD or AuDHD, it’s the CME modules that finally get done on a video call with a colleague, or the note backlog that clears in the workroom but never at home. It is not about the difficulty of the task itself, it’s about whether a nervous system has the internal push to start it alone, and after a twelve hour shift, that internal push is frequently gone entirely.
In patients, this explains a lot of noncompliance that isn’t. The patient who can’t start a home exercise program alone but does it fine in a supervised session. The person who fills out forms accurately with staff nearby and abandons the same form solo in the waiting room. Naming body doubling as an option, rather than assuming willpower is the missing ingredient, changes what you recommend next.
What actually helps
Offer virtual coworking apps or scheduled parallel work sessions as a legitimate tool, the same way you’d suggest a pillbox or an alarm. Recommend group settings for tasks patients keep abandoning solo, group PT, a study buddy, a phone call held open while someone completes a form. For yourself, stop reserving your hardest admin for solitary hours and deliberately pair it with a colleague’s presence, even silently. Treat this as infrastructure, not a personality quirk you’re embarrassed to need.
One move today
Identify one task on your own list you keep avoiding alone, and schedule fifteen minutes of parallel work with a colleague, in person or on a call, to do it today.
The tool was never about willpower. It’s about giving a brain the external structure it is legitimately missing.
